This hardware is among the accessories for the cycle ergometer flown on space shuttle missions for the astronauts' daily exercise. The crews had to assemble and disassemble the equipment as needed, so it was packed as a kit with all necessary parts and instructions. NASA transferred a complete cycle ergometer kit to the Museum when the space shuttle program ended.
