These two highly compressed springs inside the telescoping crew escape system pole provided the force for rapid deployment in case of emergency. NASA released and removed the high-tension springs for safety before delivering the crew escape system to the Museum in 2012. The pole assembly was reinstalled in Discovery; the springs remain in storage.
