This is a stand for a 1:48 scale model of the Atlas-Centaur rocket, used by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to launch a variety of satellites and probes. The rocket uses a modified Atlas D intercontinental ballistic missile first stage and a Centaur second stage. It was first used to launch the Surveyor 1 lunar probe in May 1966, and the rocket has been used in over seventy launches since. NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center made the model and stand and transferred them to the Museum in 1977.
