Edward Howard waved this checkered flag to start the Dole Race on August 16, 1927. Inspired by Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight, pineapple magnate James Dole sponsored the transpacific race from Oakland, California, to Honolulu, Hawaii. Only two aircraft arrived safely. Ten participants died.
