This is a fragment of a "terrain board" used to train pilots for the U.S. Air Force. Fighter pilots trained for missions by using scale models of terrain, over which moved a television camera that was connected to controls on the flight simulator. The trainee saw an image in the simulator that corresponded to what he or she would see if flying a real airplane over that terrain. This board represents the region around Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock, Texas.
This object is not on display at the National Air and Space Museum. It is either on loan or in storage.
