The large tool carrier replaced a smaller version that was carried on the Mobile Equipment Transporter during the Apollo 14 mission. Apollo 15 through 17 were equipped with Lunar Roving Vehicles, which could accommodate a larger tool carrier attached at the rear. The large tool carrier took advantage of the mobility and larger payload capacity of the lunar rover.

This item was used for training and NASA transferred it to the Smithsonian in May 1974.
