During the 1960s, remote sensing (studying the Earth from space) via satellite drew increased attention. The first such satellite was Landsat, launched in 1972.

This artifact represents a concept satellite, the Earth Survey Module, developed by General Electric for NASA in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It was never built.

This model is a 1:40 scale, and was transferred from NASA to the Museum in 1975.
