This is an acceleration-activated light shutter, used in conjunction with instruments or cameras sent into the upper atmosphere on sounding rockets. It was built at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) during the Aerobee era. The specific application of this shutter is not known, but it is representative of the types of mechanical devices used for sounding rocket research. It was transferred to NASM by NRL in 1982.
