NASA and the United States Forest Service have had a long partnership. Apollo 14 astronaut Stuart Roosa began his career as a Forest Service Smoke Jumper. The 2012 Space Act Agreement unites the two agencies in raising awareness about the importance of fire prevention and fire safety. Now, Smokey Bear, the Forest Service and NASA Expedition 31's mascot, will celebrate his 68th birthday aboard the International Space Station.

    Smokey Bear, aboard the International Space Station. On May 15, 2012, Smokey traveled aboard the Soyuz spacecraft with NASA astronaut Joe Acaba and Russian cosmonauts Gennady Padalka and Sergei Revin to the space station. NASA, the U.S. Forest Service and the Texas Forest Service celebrated Smokey's 68th birthday August 9, 2012, at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.
