When NASA needed a high-resolution imaging system for the Lunar Orbiter program to photograph potential Apollo landing sites, it began discussions with the National Reconnaissance Office, and in 1963 the DoD, CIA, and NASA signed a classified agreement governing the acquisition of the necessary hardware. Join curator James David as he discusses this first known instance of NASA using classified technologies.

Lunar Orbiters photographed the Moon to aid in selection of landing sites for Apollo manned missions.  This Lunar Orbiter, shown on display at the National Mall Building, was used for ground tests.
