Join us for a program with journalist Lynn Sherr, Sally Ride biographer and author of Sally Ride: America’s First Woman in Space. Learn about Sally Ride from Sherr's perspective as a journalist, friend, and scholar. Understand the life and multi-faceted significance of this historical figure and learn about the history of women's entry into the astronaut corps.

On June 18, 1983, a young physicist from California took her seat aboard the space shuttle and launched into history. On that date, Sally Ride became the first American woman in space as a mission specialist on STS-7. In this image, Ride monitors control panels from the pilot's chair on the Flight Deck.
