In the 50 years preceding Skylab, scientists had gained a fairly strong understanding of the Sun’s constitution and dynamics. What they really needed for continued study, however, was sustained, high-resolution observations of the Sun’s X-ray and ultraviolet radiations that could only be made from beyond the Earth’s obscuring atmosphere. In this lecture Karl Hufbauer will discuss how the Skylab project enabled solar scientists to partner with NASA to collect these valuable data.
