Join us for a discussion about the most current spacesuit technology and learn why this technology is important from engineering, historical, and experiential perspectives.

The program will be hosted by Cathleen Lewis, curator of Space History at the National Air and Space Museum, and will feature:

Linda Hewes, materials scientist, ILC Dover
Don Thomas, astronaut, NASA
Chris Cassidy, astronaut, NASA
Amy Ross, space suit designer, NASA Johnson Space Center

Following the program, visitors will be invited to view the Suited for Space exhibit, where Bill Ayrey, senior test engineer at ILC Dover, will present hands-on demonstrations of various spacesuit materials. Lisa Young, conservator at the National Air and Space Museum, will discuss the preservation of spacesuits.

An x-ray of Alan Shepard’s Apollo 14 spacesuit allows curators and conservators to “see” inside space clothing—a task that had previously been done by peering through the neck or the wrist with a flashlight.
