In early February 1962, Presidential Science Advisor Dr. George B. Kistiakowsky wagered ten dollars that astronaut John Glenn would never fly. James E. Webb, Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, accepted the bet. Webb won the bet when on February 20, 1962, Glenn orbited the Earth three times. Messrs. Kistiakowsky and Webb both autographed the twenty-dollar bill used for payment as a memento of the occasion.
