Space journalist Jeffrey Kluger and space history curator Margaret Weitekamp discuss the film Apollo 13, its accuracy and and the liberties it took, and its impact on the way we remember the Apollo 13 mission.
The Apollo 13 mission to the Moon was a "successful failure" that returned the crew to Earth safely despite an explosion on board the spacecraft. The dramatic story was told through the 1995 Ron Howard film Apollo 13, starring Tom Hanks as commander Jim Lovell, Kevin Bacon as command module pilot Jack Swigert, and Bill Paxton as lunar module pilot Fred Haise. The film was based on the book Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13, by Lovell and space journalist Jeffrey Kluger.
