On July 23, 1999, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory was placed in orbit by Space Shuttle Columbia STS-93. Chandra is a telescope designed to detect X-ray emission from very hot regions of the universe like exploded stars, clusters of galaxies, and matter around black holes.
