The Sputnik 1 (PS-1) satellite is shown here on a rigging truck in the assembly shop in the fall of 1957 as a technician puts finishing touches on it.  Sputnik’s sphere was polished to a high sheen to aid in tracking by telescope and to enhance its appearance. Soviet chief designer Sergei P. Korolev wanted it to look good, saying, "This ball will be exhibited in museums!"
