Bean will be available for media opportunities Friday morning for one hour; interested media must schedule their interviews in advance by sending an e-mail to larai@si.edu or mullenb@si.edu.

In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the first Apollo moon landing, the museum on the Mall opened “Alan Bean: Painting Apollo, First Artist on Another World,” a major exhibition of paintings by American artist and Apollo 12 astronaut, Bean. It is the largest exhibition of Bean’s work to date with approximately 50 original paintings and drawings. Artifacts from the museum’s collection will supplement the exhibit as 3-D references to the lunar equipment depicted in the paintings. The exhibition opened in July and will run through Jan. 13, 2010.

The painting shows how Neil Armstrong would have looked (since there are no photos) while taking the iconic photo of his lunar companion. This painting is a mirror image of the First Men - Aldrin painting.

The National Air and Space Museum will premiere Alan Bean: Painting Apollo, First Artist On Another World at the Museum on the National Mall July 16, 2009 through January 13, 2010 in conjunction with the 40th Anniversary of the first Apollo Moon landings.
