AirSpace Season 1, Episode 11:The Ninety-Nines

It took a certain amount of pure grit to be a pilot in the early days of aviation – and even more for the women who had to defy convention just to get up in the air.

Explore the history of the Ninety-Nines, the organization of women pilots originally led by Amelia Earhart and still active today.

In This Episode:

  • A rockstar pilot during her life, Amelia Earhart was committed to building a community of fellow women pilots. This is episode is about that community.
  • The community took root in the 1929 Women’s Air Derby, the first official women-only air race in the United States. The race was full of spectacular women who not only had to contend with the dangers of flight in the 1920s—but of course sexism ... and potentially sabotage.
  • The Ninety-Nines are still around and working to excite girls about flying and careers in STEM.
