    Mr. James Gildea

Aleck H. Jensen was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Airs Corps during World War II. He served as navigator and bombardier on a B-29 aircraft based on Saipan, flying 35 missions over Japan. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the Asiatic Pacific Medal. During this period of military aviation, the navigator played a key role in the success or failure of each mission. At first Lt. Jensen used only celestial navigation and later LORAN to guide the plane on 3,000 mile flights over the Pacific and Japan, sometimes in formation, but often flown individually, by command order. Under enemy fire, with engine failure and other adverse conditions, Lt. Jensen was always consistent in pinpointing the target and reliably and safely guiding his plane and crew back to home base on Saipan. His book, "Superfortress: 35 Missions Over Japan," can be found in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum Library, the U.S. Air Force Museum Library, and U.S. Air Force Academy Library.
