Marvin D. Anderson, 1st Lt. Navigator, 91st Bomb Group, 8th Air Force based in Bassingborn England began service in the infantry. He transferred to the Army Air Corps via the Cadet Program and navigation school.
Marv was the Navigator on the well known B-17, "Spirit of 44". On their 20th mission in the "Spirit of 44," while limping home on two engines low over the German countryside they were credited with shooting down 10 attacking German aircraft. They did return safely to England but that was the end of the war for the "Spirit of 44" as she became salvage for parts.
Marv flew 22 missions; the last two missions were in the B-17 "Boston Bomber". On the second mission Marv and crew had to crash land their crippled "Boston Bomber" near Muenster Germany. Two of the crewmembers died in the crash. After spending a short time in a German hospital Marv was then transported to Stalag I in Barth Germany on the North Sea. Stalag I was his residence for the remainder of the war.
