Tom was born in Istabul Turkey while his father was serving in the U.S. Navy – Feb 6, 1958. He graduated from Glen Burnie High School in Maryland in 1976 and from the Air Force Academy in 1980.

Tom was killed April 14, 1982 on a routine bombing mission training at Avon Park, Florida. He was am F-4 pilot. He was buried in the National Cemetery in Wilmington, N.C.
