    Duel D. Christian was born and raised in Colorado. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1962 and attended Flight School under the MARCAD Program at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida. In 1963 he received his Wings and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He was then stationed at the Marine Corps Air Facility Santa Ana in California where he trained to fly the H-34 and H-46 Helicopters as part of the HMM-361 and HMM-163 Squadrons.
    Duel served in Vietnam as a 1st Lieutenant from 1965-1966 where he was awarded several Air Medals for his service including the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism displayed during a mission on 10 May 1966. He was also awarded the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry on 28 Feb 1966. Duel served on active duty until 1968, then joined the Marine Corps Reserve to complete his 20 years of service to his country.
