Honored by:
Mr. Kenneth E. Mattox
A student at Wheaton College in Illinois when Pearl Harbor was attacked, Thomas volunteered for service in the Army Air Corps. Placed in command of a famed Douglas C-47 Skytrain, his missions as a 9th Air Force pilot included paratroop drops, glider towing, and cargo drops over Nazi-occupied Europe.
He now owns and operates a family Christian bookstore in downtown Philadelphia. He last flew a C-47 in June of 1993, still maintaining that it was the greatest plane ever built.
