    The French army was using balloons for reconnaissance and communication. General Pershing saw the need of balloon companies of his own. He requested 100 balloon companies of 240 men each. 2nd Lt Ferguson volunteered and was sent to Kelly Field, Texas, for training in ballooning and free flight. His company was the last to ship out to Europe. Although he was a 2nd Lt and not a Captain, he was in charge of the company.

    In the June 1978 issue of National Geographic there is a picture of his wings in an article on the newly opened National Air and Space Museum.
