Born in 1965 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Alan D. Meyer earned his private pilot's license in 1984 and has over 400 hours of flight experience. He graduated from Western Michigan University in 1989 with a major in history. In 1998, he was awarded a Hagley Fellowship at the University of Delaware, where he is pursuing a doctorate in American history. He received his master's degree in history in 2000. His research on the history of private aviation in post-World War II America combines his love of history and his love of flying. In 2002, he won a Guggenheim Fellowship at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.

A U.S. Army officer from 1990 to 1998, Meyer received the Soldier's Medal in 1992 and became a member of the Army Special Forces in 1995. Over the course of his military career, he has served in Okinawa, Japan and in several European countries, including Bosnia and Macedonia. He has been a member of the Maryland National Guard since 1998, and he served in Iraq in 2003.
