As a test pilot in the 1940s he tested the Ryan Fireball, the first turbo prop combination gas and jet plane. H flew with Chuck Yeager at Murdock Field, CA. After Ryan he was hired by North American as Head Test Pilot. He was only 28 years old. He was killed in Feb. 1949 testing (I think) XAJ1.
