Sergeant Powell enlisted in July 1956. During his 20 year career he logged flight time in aircraft types C-47, C-54, C-124, C-121, SA-16 and KC-135 in positions as Radio Operator, Combat Information Control Officer and Inflight Refueling Technician (Boom Operator). He logged 7,500 plus flying hours including 1,100 combat hours in various operations in Southeast Asia (SEA). Operations supported were “Young Tiger” and “Linebacker I and II”. During an early Linebacker mission he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Other awards include Air Medal (6), USAF Comm, United Nations Service and Combat Crew Readiness with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster.
