    Lt. Higgins flew a total of 40 combat missions as a B-24 pilot and co-pilot in the Asiatic/Pacific theatre with the 7th Air Force and the Far East Air forces. He flew 34 missions in support of the Philippine Campaign from the small island of Anquar in the Pelilu Chain. His last six missions were flown from Okinawa to targets in Japan. He received his DFC for a mission to Zamboanga Province of the Philippines in support of amphibious landing and the bombing of Clarion Air Field. He was a member of the 494th Bomb Group (H) and the 866th Squadron. He was awarded the Air Medal (5), Asiatic/Pacific Medal with ten Battle Stars and the Philippine Liberation Medal.
