My description of "Honoree's Achievement" is recorded with the DFC. Archives (video recording and written). A brief summary: In mid-1973 we were called upon to fly a reconnaissance mission over Southern Laos to acquire important strategic information in an area of high concentration of enemy activity. We had no fighter support and came under heavy antiaircraft fire. We were able to accomplish the mission objective, avoid being shot down, and returned to home base in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand
Note: I contacted the Artist, Ruth Mayer in 2005 and negotiated the painting of a memorial for the DFC Society. Originally we had talked about the painting being a montage of WW11 aviators; however, fortunately it evolved to include the Korean War, Viet Nam, and the Gulf war. The agreement has been to allow Ruth to paint without outside influence and pressure. We appreciate the work that the historian, Barry Lander, has done with Ruth in helping her with some historical information. We understand that a copy of Ruth Mayer's painting will be located at the wall of honor at the Smithsonian. We are delighted and honored.
