From mechanical to nuclear, from cryogenics to safety I have become over the years a jack of all engineering trades. After graduating in mechanical engineering from the University of Buffalo I took a job in California as a flight test engineer for the F-100 Super Sabre jet. Soon after, the development of the Jupiter IRBM led to a stint in Huntsville, AL. Cape Canaveral concluded my direct involvement with flight as a propulsion engineer on the Titan I and II ICBM's.
Now the switch to Senior Engineer assigned to the nuclear reactor installation for the Nimitz Class aircraft carriers. Here I identified the need to modify the ship's design in order to shorten the total dry dock time. Research projects were the next line of engineering jobs in my future. The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and the installation of the fusion test reactor led to my spending $100 million of a $425 million project. At the end of this research project off to Jefferson Lab in Virginia where again I morphed into a Safety Specialist doing periodic safety inspections of all the Accelerator Division work areas.
Retiring did not inhibit my continued curiosity into ALL things pertaining to engineering concepts. I have since become a safety consultant working with both the Duke University Free Electron Laser and the NASA Langley Research Center. Along the way I have continued to study to keep up with the latest developments, earning an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, and the CSP (Certified Safety Professional) designation. I have also continued with my fascination with flight and space. Living close to Kitty Hawk, birthplace of modern flight and the Virginia Air and Space Museum, were I volunteered as a docent, keeps me dreaming of fixture space flight and the wonder of the unknown.
