A country boy from Nebraska for whom WW II offered the opportunity to fly. Veteran of 3 wars and 31 years in Marine Corps Aviation. 179 combat missions in WW II and Korea. Awards include Silver Star, 4 Distinguished Flying Crosses, Bronze Star and about 15 others plus the Air Force Able Astronaut Award.
After retirement in 1973 with honorary promotion to Brig. Gen., was Mayor of Lake Forest Park, WA, drillmaster motorcycle drill team, published national trade association magazine.
