BGen Melancon was commissioned a Second Lieutenant on January 29, 1955. He served a total of four years of active duty and twenty-three years, six months in the Air Force Reserves and the National Guard. He served as an all-weather fighter-interceptor pilot and in the civil engineering career field. His last assignment was as the Assistant Adjutant General, Louisiana, and as the commander of the Louisiana Air National Guard. His highest decoration was the USAF Distinguished Service Medal.
