Bob Charles Everoski grew up in Locust Valley, Nassau County, New York. He graduated from The College of Emporia in Emporia, Kansas in May, 1968 with a Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Physics. While at the college, he spent countless hours observing the heavens. Bob also did some research projects for the well known astronomy publication known as Sky & Telescope, and got his results published in a few of their issues. He was also selected to be included in Who’s Who Among Students In American Colleges and Universities in their 1967-1968 edition.
Everoski obtained his Master of Science Degree with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Physics at Emporia State University also in Emporia in May, 1971. While at the university, he taught astronomy at The Peterson Planetarium from May, 1969 to December, 1970.
He then worked at the Burke Baker Planetarium in Houston, Texas from September, 1971 to February, 1974 as an Astronomy Teacher. He also made regular appearances as a guest astronomer on The Cadet Don and Robot television show on KTRK Channel 13 in Houston.
The first public show that he wrote at this planetarium was called Apollo. He got to visit the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, and train like an astronaut. NASA also gave him permission to interview Dave Scott, the Commander of the Apollo 15 mission. Astronaut Scott had hoped to attend the inaugural performance of Apollo, but was unable to do so due to prior commitments. However, Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the lunar surface was present.
Skylab was America’s first manned space station put in Earth Orbit in 1973. It was during the third three man crew of Skylab that they studied, among other things, Comet Kohoutek. On 4 January 1974, they reported their observations to Mission Control at the Johnson Space Center. The Associated Press (AP) called Bob Everoski at the Burke Baker Planetarium to interpret the astronaut’s description of the comet in laymen’s term. The next day, his name appeared in the AP story about the third manned Skylab mission, and information on the comet.
From February, 1974 to August, 1974, he hosted an astronomy program called The Universe and You on radio Station KWBA in Baytown, Texas 1360 on the AM dial. That same year, he founded the Southwest Houston Astronomical Society, and served as its Director for ten years. He was also the Project Coordinator of the Upward Bound Math-Science Regional Center at Wichita State University in 1992, and was instrumental in getting astronaut Kathryn Sullivan to visit the center for a day. Sullivan was the first American woman astronaut to walk in space.
Everoski worked at The Science Place Planetarium in Dallas, Texas from September, 1985 to January, 1987, and the Richland College Planetarium also in Dallas from January, 1986 to January, 1987.
He also taught Astronomy and Space Science Classes at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas from 2002-2007.
In related areas, He also has ten years of experience as an Exploration Geophysicist in gravity and magnetic data, and Geodesy in the oil and gas industry. He was the Founder of the Dallas Society of Potential Field Geophysicists in 1983, and served as its Director for four years. In addition, he tutored student-athletes in mathematics classes through Advanced Calculus One on the campus of Wichita State University from August, 1987 to September, 2011.
Currently, he writes astronomy and space science articles for three Kansas newspapers. They are The Wichita Eagle, The Newton Kansan, and The Emporia Gazette. He has two children named Robert David and Ryan Edward.
