Long-time Westchester, CA resident Bob McGindley passed away on May 29, 2014 at the age of 81, surrounded by his loving family. Bob was the only child of Lucia Berger McGindley of Kansas City, MO, a former private secretary of Hollywood actor Basil Rathbone. Bob was born and raised in and around Hollywood and his childhood was full of classic Hollywood culture. Bob graduated from Loyola High School and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1952. Bob was trained as a Russian translator and served his country in the Korean War. He earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1960. Upon returning home from his service, he worked as an auditor for Security Pacific Bank.

Bob formed Del Rey Computing with his wife Mary in 1970 and it has been going strong for over 44 years. Bob was a self-professed “computer genius.” He designed computer systems for all types of business: aerospace, importing, advertising, multi-level marketing, workers compensation claims processing, telephonic water meter reading, as well as designing and implementing inventory, accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and payroll systems for mainframes, client servers, and stand-alone computers. Later in life, Bob formed PlanesByDad, a companion business to his daughter’s SparklesByAmber, featuring handmade historic aviation dioramas, and Buttons/Buttons/Buttons, which has designed and sold over 5,000 handmade buttons.

Bob was a life-long lover of knowledge. He maintained an extensive collection of Ancient Egyptian artifacts and loved Egypt so much that he named his daughters after Ancient Egyptian princesses. Bob was an avid reader and served as Vice President of the Westchester-Loyola Village Friends of the Library for many years. His knowledge of aviation history was unsurpassed.

Bob has also been closely affiliated with Golden Performing Arts Center (PAC) and the historic Madrid Theatre in the San Fernando Valley for past 15 years. Golden PAC considers Bob one of their “Angels” and has endowed a Bob McGindley Memorial Scholarship to support children’s participation in live theatre.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Mary McGindley, his son Robert McGindley, Jr., daughter-in-law Kristina and granddaughters Madelyn and Chelsea of Denver, CO, his son Marc McGindley of Newhall, CA, his daughter Meryt McGindley of Silver Spring, MD, his daughter Shera Hunt, son-in-law Joshua and grandsons Ryan and Jaxsen of Salem, NY and his daughter Amber McGindley of West Hills, CA.
