Byron Haney worked for Bell Aircraft from 1944-1955 when they were working on the XS-1 (X-1) project. He accepted the responsibility of supervising the pressure testing of the fuel tanks to be used in the X-1. He also designed, detailed (made drawings), assembled, and tested a small instrument group complete with its “black box” that was installed on the left side of the cockpit of the X-1 that hangs in the Smithsonian Museum.
