Al Pugsley was born November 28, 1939, in Fort Worth, Texas. When just 15, he took a $5 flying lesson on a whim. Thus began his lifelong love of flying: soloing at age 16, earning his Private Pilot’s license at 17, Commercial at 18 and Flight Instructor at 19, much to his mother’s chagrin! Before he was 23, he had bought a Cessna 140 with friends, earned his instrument and multi-engine ratings and landed a job as the Chief Flight Instructor at a small Fort Worth airport. Soon after his 24th birthday, he was hired as a TWA engineer and later also as a flight instructor, based in Kansas City. He became a Captain in less than four years, as he already had 3500 hours of flight time, more than most new pilots. He flew seven different aircraft during his 30-year TWA career, ranging from the DC-9 to the Boeing 747, flying both domestic and international flights. He also continued to fly general aviation aircraft, earned his sail plane license over Pike’s Peak in Colorado and owned one or more planes for 48 years, which added to his 17,000 total flight hours. After early retirement in December 1993 at age 54, he taught general aviation and acrobatics, even receiving a Cessna Citation jet rating. In 2007, after 50 years of aviation safety, he received the Wright Brothers “Master Pilot” award from the FAA. By 2009 he was newly known as Captain Electric, when electric cars became his passion, just as flying had always been. Al died on November 6, 2023, just before his 84th birthday, survived by his wife of more than 61 years, Carole Wilson Pugsley, daughters Lori Harrison and Nancy White and granddaughter Maria Lara. His last flight was possibly his best.
