    An experienced pilot, Capt. Albert Pfeifer Jr. joined the U.S. Ferry Command in 1943 and was transferred to Sookerating, India in June of 1944 for participation in the China-Burma-India (CBI) Theater. His mission was flying troops and equipment over the treacherous Himalayas ("The Hump") which claimed the lives of more than a thousand pilots and their crews. He completed 87 round trip missions flying unarmed C-46's and C-47's totally more than 650 hours air time on routes which took him to Kun Ming and other locations in China and Tibet. He was awarded both the Distinguished Service Cross and the Air Medal for meritorious service and bravery in action. Following the war, Capt. Pfeifer became a founding member of the Hump Pilots Association and, along with other pilots and crews who flew the Hump, was honored by the Chinese Air Force.
