    Was a United Airlines pilot 1944-1982. Flew the Pacific Airlift for 18 months – 1944-1946. During career, flew Captain on DC-3, DC-4, DC-6, DC-7, DC-8, DC-10, Convair 340 & 440, Boeing 737, 747 and 767. Was first jet pilot in U.S. certified for Category II ILS approaches. Was one of the originators of the Cockpit Resource Mgm’t Program. He was instrumental in putting cathode ray tubes (CRT) in the cockpit of the B 767, the first U.S. Commercial airplane to be so equipped. On retirement in 1982, Capt. Cavanagh was Director of Flight Standards and Training for United Airlines.
