Captain Daryl Ivan Tewell first flew into this world on April 12, 1933, landing in Cumberland, MD, where he began his childhood. He went on to attend Fort Hill High School and graduated in 1951. He began his military career by enlisting in the National Guard, just shy of his 18th birthday. He joined the US Navy in 1952, and sailed the world aboard the aircraft carrier USS Hancock, serving as an aviation mechanic with Fighter Squadron VF-121. In 1956, after an Honorable Discharge, he was hired by Capital Airlines as an A&E mechanic. The GI Bill helped pay for flying lessons, and in 1960 he became a flight engineer with United Airlines. He transitioned to Eastern Airlines in 1963 and earned his Captain's wings in 1972 onboard a Lockheed Electra. Captain Tewell went on to fly the Boeing 737 and Airbus A-300. He retired as an L-1011 captain in 1989 after 26 years of service.
