Capt Donald James Duncan, American Airlines(retired), received his pilot’s license #67915-41 on 31 Jan 1941. In addition, he has Commercial, Instructor, and Instrument ratings. He was in the Army Air Corps as an Instructor at Brady Field, TX, flying BT-13s/PT 19s. In 1945 he was a civilian pilot in the Air Transport Command flying C-54s to Europe and North Africa. The next 37 years Capt Duncan flew for American Airlines in nearly the entire fleet, to include DC-3, DC-4, DC-6, CV-240, DC-7, B-707, DC-10, B-747. During his career he was a flight crew member on several Inaugural and Speed Record flights to include 23 Jan 1962 from Nashville, TN to Idlewild, NY - 632.12 mph in a B-707-720B. A most memorable day was 21 Apr 1980, when Capt Duncan flew AA Flight 76 from L.A. to Wash D.C. delivering Mrs. Frances Bergen and "Super Captain" Charlie McCarthy to the Smithsonian Institution. He finished his distinguished career as Flight Manager and Chief Pilot at LAX, remaining triple qualified on the B-707, DC-10, and B-747. His log book reflects 42 years with over 26,000 hours flying some forty types of aircraft across the USA, the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Pecos and the Rio Grande.
