    Donald J. McDermott joined the USAF in March 1955. He was trained as a pilot finishing his tour as F-86 D/L all weather interceptor pilot with the rank of First Lieutenant. On active duty he flew the T-6G Texan, T-28, T-33, F-86, B-25, C-47 and C-45.
    He was hired as a copilot by United Airlines in September 1964. He flew as a second officer for 3 years, as a copilot for 15 years and as a Captain for 11 years. During this 28 years period, he amassed over 15,000 hours of flight time. He flew the Boeing 727, 737, 757, 767 and 747. He also flew the Convair 340, DC6 and DC10 aircraft. He retired as B747 Second Officer July 1997 with 33 years of service without incident.
