    Capt. Earl Colburn flew his first solo flight on his 16th birthday in 1949.
    Earl joined the U.S. Air Force before he turned 20 going through cadet training. He served for six years, doing some instructing, and then went to flying charters out of Lubbock, Texas.
    Earl was hired by United Air Lines on March 6, 1961 and retired in 1993, after 32 years with the company, as Captain on the Boeing 747.
    After several years of retirement Earl was back flying as an instrument instructor until shortly before he flew west in 1998.
