LTC John A. Vanderpoel (Ret.)
He was born near Turner Field, Albany, Georgia and was schooled at a number of places before being graduated from The Taft School and Clarkson College. In the Navy he was commissioned and received his wings as a fighter pilot. He served two cruises to Vietnamese waters and made more than 900 catapult takeoffs and carrier landings during his career. Following the war, he became a squadron Executive Officer and a Commanding Officer. Later he commanded the China Naval Air Weapons Center in California, followed by more than three years in the Office of the Secretary of Defense and two years in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. His service covered 27 years, and he retired in 1994.
Following retirement, he worked in industry in situation analyses, during which time he frequently was a lecturer at The Naval War College and at industrial corporation’s sites.
