Fred Burgess started his aviation career February 4, 1951 as a line maintenance mechanic at 18 years of age, working for Capital Airlines at the Washington National Airport. He transferred to flight operations on April 5, 1953 as a DC-3 copilot. He was promoted to captain in 1957.
He retired March 31, 1992 as a Boeing 747 captain after 41 years with 39 years on the flight line with United Airlines. He worked for United from age 21 to age 60 at retirement.
