    Born On Oct. 20, 1930 and grew up on a farm in Illinois. Graduated from Dundee High School in 1948 and from the University of Illinois in 1953 with a B.S. Degree in Engineering. Received a commission in the U.S. Army through R.O.T.C. and was accepted into Army Aviation. Completed basic flight training at Gary AFB in San Marcos, Texas, followed by advanced flight training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Completed helicopter flight training at Fort Rucker, Alabama in Sept 1955 and served the U.S. Army in Germany with the 317th Engineer Bn. as a helicopter pilot. After being discharged from the U.S. Army, was hired by United Airlines as a flight officer in Aug. 1957. Flew the following aircraft for United: Douglas DC-6 and DC-7, Caravelle, Douglas DC-8, Boeing 727. and the Douglas DC-10. Retired from United Airlines in Oct. 1990 as a Captain flying the DC-10.
