A former enlisted man, Capt, Abelein received his wings and commission July 1950. He served on active duty for 28 years flying operational missions during both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He flew a wide variety of Naval aircraft from seaplanes to jet fighters acquiring some 8,300 flying hours. His most significant assignments were as Commanding Officer of Patrol Squadron Five, Navy Department Middle Desk Officer, Chief of Staff Patrol Forces Seventh Fleet, and Professor of Naval Science at Tulane University. Decorations included the Legion Of Merit, Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal and Meritorious and Unit Commendation ribbons. Following retirement he continued flying for a few years as a pilot and partner in a small air charter service.
