A carrier, fighter pilot, Tie flew the relatively obsolete F4F Wildcat aircraft valiantly in combat during^ the Guadalcanal and Rennell Islands Campaigns against the Japanese ZERO and sundry other warplanes. His ship having been put out of action, He moved with his squadron to a shore station and under the secret organization called "The Cactus Air Force" helped start the retreat of Japanese Forces from the southwest Pacific Region. He was credited with four sure kills and seven probables in aerial combat actions for which he was awarded several Distinguished Flying Crosses, several Air Medals, and numerous combat theater and campaign medals and ribbons. He was an exemplary leader and was detailed, during his career, as commanding officer of several aircraft carrier squadrons in addition to important ship and staff assignments.
