After graduating from Stanford University in 1942, Era Forest, Captain, USAAF, completed 50 combat missions as Lead Navigator and radar observer with 301st B-17 Group of the 15th Air Force including 6 missions over the heavily defended Ploesti oil and refinery targets in Romania.

He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, 4 Air Medals and 6 battle stars. After returning to the US, he volunteered for a second combat tour upon completing pilot training and joining a B-29 squadron at war's end.
