    Ira entered the U.S. Army Air Forces (known as the the Army Air Corps) in Nov. 1942. He was stationed in Sudbury, England with the 8th Air Force, and flew 35 missions as co-pilot over Germany in a B-17.

    He returned home to Fargo, North Dakota (ND) where he was discharged as a lieutenant. He joined the ND Air Guard, where he flew F-51's. His unit was alerted and called back to active duty at the time of the Korean War. He served two years and was discharged as a captain.

    In 1956, he was employed by Eastern Air Lines, flying everything from the Constellation to the 727 before retiring in 1977. While living in Illinois he owned a farm and developed a landing strip. He owned an Aero-Commander and Cessnas. It was sold in 1975 to the Chicago Glider Club.
